Let us all raise our voices for the lives of our sons in Moroccan Prisons

29 سبتمبر 2026

With utmost vigilance and deep concern, the Sahrawi Organ Against the Moroccan Occupation (ISACOM) continues to closely monitor the hunger strike being waged by nine prisoners from the Gdeim Izik group in Moroccan prisons, which began on 23 September 2026.

We are receiving, on an ongoing basis, reports and information confirming the deteriorating conditions of Sahrawi civilian prisoners across various detention sites and prisons in Morocco. At the same time, tensions continue to rise within these prisons as a result of the Moroccan prison administration’s continued use of systematic practices aimed at restricting and pressuring prisoners, including denial of rights, ill-treatment, isolation, forced transfers, medical neglect, as well as practices that interfere with their rights and their relations with their surroundings inside the prisons and with their families.

The actions undertaken by the Moroccan prison administration against Sahrawi civilian prisoners can only be understood as a continuation of a policy of retaliation and systematic pressure, through aggressive and discriminatory practices aimed at undermining the rights and gains they have accumulated over sixteen years of steadfastness, patience, resilience, and commitment to dignity, through numerous struggles and human rights battles that have marked the experience of the Gdeim Izik prisoners in Moroccan prisons.

As ISACOM declares its absolute and unconditional solidarity with the Sahrawi civilian prisoners held in Moroccan prisons, and expresses its full support for them in every struggle they undertake in defence of their rights and dignity, it:

* Supports the prisoners’ legitimate demands to safeguard their dignity and respect their rights, foremost among them ensuring appropriate conditions of detention and imprisonment for civilians from occupied territories, in accordance with the provisions of the Fourth Geneva Convention, and calls for their prompt release, in implementation of the decisions issued by the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, as well as the decisions and observations issued by the United Nations Committee against Torture.

* Appeals to the international community to intervene urgently and effectively and to exert pressure on the Moroccan occupying State to ensure that Sahrawi civilian prisoners are afforded their legitimate rights, and to guarantee the immediate and full implementation of relevant United Nations decisions and resolutions concerning their situation.

* Holds the Moroccan occupying State fully responsible for the safety and fate of the Sahrawi civilian prisoners on hunger strike, and calls upon it to respond urgently to their legitimate demands and to put an end to all forms of pressure, ill-treatment, and practices that threaten their safety and fundamental rights.
