Denial of a passport: A blatant restriction on freedom of movement

Sahrawi citizen Affan Sabbar is being subjected to harassment and deprivation of his rights. At the Sahrawi Organ Against the Moroccan Occupation, we have been following with condemnation the repercussions of the arrest of his brother, Salah Eddine Sabbar, on 5 December 2025, as well as the various forms of mistreatment, isolation, and degrading and humiliating treatment he has endured at Ait Melloul 1 Prison.

As new forms of harassment against the children of the late Sahrawi human rights activist Brahim Sabbar emerge, the family’s suffering is being renewed through interference with Affan Sabbar’s freedom of movement and deprivation of his rights.

The Sahrawi Organ Against the Moroccan Occupation strongly condemns the Moroccan authorities in the town of Lagsabi, southern Morocco, for failing, for nearly a month, to process the documents required for his passport application and for refusing, on 5 August 2026, to sign his passport renewal application.

The Sahrawi Organ Against the Moroccan Occupation considers that the treatment to which Affan Sabbar, son of the late former political prisoner Brahim Sabbar, is being subjected constitutes a violation of his right to obtain a passport and a restriction on his freedom of movement, motivated by retaliation against the family’s political positions in support of the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.
